Welcome to i-CAT

We live in an age in which intangibles are becoming increasingly significant. There is an ever-increasing need to attune the processes and outcomes of our education to meet the challenges of today. Our education policy has positively responded to these needs to a great extent, by proposing a wide range of reforms to improve the standards of curricula and instructional strategies. The quality of educators at different levels in terms of knowledge, skills and attitude, is the prime determinant of the success or failure of these policy initiatives. Chronic deficiencies in the teaching-learning environment as well as in the expertise of teachers have been a persistent problem in our country. Professional development of teachers by supporting and developing teacher competencies has therefore become the focus of progressive institutions like the Indira Gandhi National Open University. This has found expression in November, 2009, in the form of a ground-breaking initiative namely, the establishment of the Institute of Competency Advancement of Teachers (i-CAT) which has the objective of training teachers through using multi-media technology. The programmes organized by i-CAT, Cochin, focus on inclusive education strategies, developing ICT capabilities in teachers for utilizing emerging technologies and imparting skill upgradation for teachers and are expected to contribute substantially to the professional development of educators.
